I'm an APA

APA Parenting MEME
I was tagged by Mother of Two to do this. It's an Asian Pacific American (APA) parenting meme. I've actually never heard the term APA before this. I guess there's a term for everything. Anyway, here goes...

1. I am:
Korean-American (2nd generation... I think... I've heard different things about which generation is actually 1st)

2. My Daughter is:
Korean-American (3rd generation)

3. I first realized I was APA when...
I had to go to school on Saturday, too- to learn Korean.

4. People think my name is:
reversed when they read it on paper (they assume my first name is Kim... but I have a totally normal English name, so I don't really get it)

5. The family traditions I most want to pass on are:
celebrating each birthday with cake, waiting until Christmas day to open gifts, going hiking on vacations

6. The family traditions I least want to pass on are:
unhealthy eating habits (the more the better), pressure to excel academically & musically

7. My child’s first word in English is:
[none] we're going to have to work on this one

8. My child’s first word in non-English is:
umma (mommy in Korean)

9. The non-English phrase/word most used in my home:
Mma-mma? mma-mma! (food in Korean)

10. One thing I love about being an APA parent is :
exposing my child to Korean food and language

11. One thing I hate about being an APA parent is:
knowing, first hand, the insecurity that my daughter might have growing up as a minority

12. The best thing about being part of an APA family is...
deep respect for elders, and of course the food

13. The worst thing about being part of an APA family:
pressure to have a boy

14. To me , being an Asian Pacific American means:
acknowledging my heritage and where I come from and, at the same time, being proud to be an American
